Dr Oliver Langmead
Lecturer in Creative WritingResearch Interests
I write fantasy and science fiction.
I use my research to challenge form and genre, producing both commercial prose novels and hybrid verse-novels. Some of the themes my work has addressed include: beauty / ecology and extinction / nonhuman voices / anthropomorphism / terraforming / mythological retellings and adaptations / utopias and dystopias.
I also work in science-based creative non-fiction. In 2018 I was the writer in residence at the European Space Agency’s Astronaut Centre. My research in this area covers human space flight, human enhancement and ecological philosophy.
Some of my projects also engage with writing for games. In particular – video games, board games and pen and paper RPGs.

PhD Supervision Interests
My expertise is in speculative and genre fiction. I am particularly interested in supervising projects that engage with fantasy and science fiction of all kinds, but would be keen to discuss crime, noir, horror and the gothic as well. I would also welcome proposals on games writing (video games / board games / pen and paper RPGs), long-form narrative poetry, science-based creative non-fiction, and work that engages with human space flight / human enhancement / ecological philosophy / terraforming / mythological retellings / utopias.
