Professor Alison Stone
ProfessorResearch Interests
My research interests span feminist philosophy, post-Kantian continental philosophy, the history of philosophy, and aesthetics.
Currently I am working on women in nineteenth-century philosophy. As part of this I have edited Frances Power Cobbe: Essential Writings of a Nineteenth-Century Feminist Philosophy (Oxford University Press, early 2022) and authored a Cambridge Element on Frances Power Cobbe (forthcoming, Cambridge University Press, May 2022). I am co-editing the Oxford Handbook of Nineteenth-Century British and American Women Philosophers, with Lydia Moland, and my book Nineteenth-Century Women Philosophers in Britain will be out in early 2022 (https://global.oup.com/academic/product/women-philosophers-in-nineteenth-century-britain-9780192874719?q=Alison%20stone&lang=en&cc=gb). The figures covered include Cobbe, Harriet Martineau, Constance Naden, Vernon Lee, Julia Wedgwood, Helena Blavatsky, and Annie Besant, amongst others. I am also interested in the women of German Idealism and Romanticism.
My previous books are: Petrified Intelligence: Nature in Hegel’s Philosophy (SUNY Press, 2004); Luce Irigaray and the Philosophy of Sexual Difference (Cambridge University Press, 2006), supported by a Leverhulme Research Fellowship in 2004-5; An Introduction to Feminist Philosophy (Polity Press, 2007); Feminism, Psychoanalysis, and Maternal Subjectivity (Routledge, 2011); The Value of Popular Music: An Approach from Post-Kantian Aesthetics (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016) - which won the Outstanding Publication Award from the Popular Music Interest Group, Society for Music Theory; Nature, Ethics and Gender in German Romanticism and Idealism (Rowman and Littlefield, 2018); Being Born: Birth and Philosophy (Oxford University Press, 2019), supported by a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship.
I've also edited the Edinburgh Critical History of Nineteenth-Century Philosophy (Edinburgh University Press, 2011), and co-edited the Routledge Companion to Feminist Philosophy (Routledge, 2017).
I have co-edited the journal the Hegel Bulletin and been an associate editor and interim co-editor of Hypatia: A Journal of Feminist Philosophy.
I would be particularly keen to supervise PhD projects in relation to my current interests in nineteenth-century women philosophers.
Current Teaching
I teach Nineteenth Century Philosophy (PPR.214), Aesthetics (PPR.301) and Feminist Philosophy (PPR.392f).
